In the State of New Jersey, the seriousness of a theft charge depends upon the amount (value) of the item(s) allegely stolen. Under $200, is a disorderly persons offense. Between $200 and $500 is a fourth degree felony. Between $500 and $75,000 is a third degree felony. Above $75,000, is a second degree felony.
